Idea behind SAFe ART (Agile Release Train)

In SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework), in order to provide value to the customer, several Agile Teams form an organization known as an ART (Agile Release Train). Today let's discuss about the idea behind an ART and its significant details.

An ART's main objective is to provide a framework for organizing and managing the work of various Agile Teams in a significant development project. It makes it possible for the teams to cooperate and continuously provide value.

Programme Increment (PI): The ART runs on a predetermined cadence known as the Programme Increment (PI), which is a timebox usually lasting 8 to 12 weeks. A set of features or capabilities can be planned, developed, and delivered by teams using the PI as a planning and execution boundary.

Agile Teams: An ART is built up of various Agile Teams, each of which has between 5 and 12 members that are qualified to create, test, and deliver software. These teams are cross-functional, self-managing, and given the authority to decide what to do with their work. They may follow Scrum, XP, Kanban etc. and they celebrate all the Scrum Ceremonies in their team level.

Agile Release Train Engineer (RTE): An Agile Release Train Engineer (RTE) oversees the coordination and execution of the train and facilitates the ART. The RTE removes obstacles, encourages continual progress, and aids in facilitating team-level ceremonies.

PI Planning: All teams in the ART gather for a PI Planning session at the beginning of each Programme Increment. The teams work together to plan the work for the forthcoming PI at this event, breaking down features into user stories and calculating the effort required. The objective is to coordinate the efforts of the teams and establish a common understanding of the impending work.

Iterations and Integration: Agile Teams operate within each PI in fixed-length iterations known as Sprints, which are typically two weeks long. The teams deliver functional, tested software at the conclusion of each iteration. The teams routinely combine their efforts to ensure a well-functioning system.

Demo and Inspect and Adapt (I&A): The ART hosts a System Demo at the conclusion of each PI when the teams showcase the advancement of the product they have developed. Stakeholders have the chance to comment on the demo and confirm the advancements made. The ART does an Inspect and Adapt (I&A) workshop after the demo to discuss the prior PI and pinpoint areas for improvement.

In general, the Agile Release Train is an important part of the Scaled Agile Framework and is created to assist enterprises in coordinating the work of numerous Agile Teams and regularly delivering value to the customer. Organizations can increase their responsiveness and market competitiveness by coordinating the ART's work with the strategic objectives of the organization and empowering the Agile Teams.
