Fast-tracking and Crashing

Schedule compression is a technique used in project management to shorten the overall timeline for a project without reducing the scope. This can be done using two approaches: crashing the schedule or fast-tracking the project. ๐Ÿ’ก

For a variety of reasons, including the following, project managers use schedule compression techniques:

1. A distorted timetable
2. After a certain date, resources are no longer available
3. Introduction of unanticipated or unrecognized risks
4. Quick product launch
5. Adapting client needs etc.

๐Ÿ‘‰The primary distinction between crashing and fast-tracking is that with crashing, the timeframe is compressed by adding more resources or putting in more effort ie; long working hours. By combining or omitting some processes, fast-tracking shortens the schedule. Both approaches have the potential to result in higher costs and lower quality. Fast-tracking is regarded as risky because it might impair coordination. Crashing is sometimes viewed as a last-resort option, since it might lead to inferior quality and higher expenses.

๐Ÿ‘‰While there is no assurance that costs would rise as a result of crashing, shortening project lead times can need the use of more resources, such as extra staff and overtime. To avoid crashing, weigh the costs of moving the project forward with the advantages of having it finished earlier. Furthermore, this method of compressing the schedule only functions when you have extra resources available to finish the job faster.

๐Ÿ‘‰In fast-tracking, we can expedite projects by beginning work on various project components at the same time or by omitting unnecessary stages. In a nutshell, fast-tracking is doing multiple tasks at once rather than one at a time. This method is frequently viewed as dangerous because it might result in concerns with coordination and the final product's potential quality.

๐Ÿ‘‰When a schedule needs to be compressed, project managers typically start with fast-tracking. The tasks in the initial project schedule are rearranged using this strategy, which doesn't add any additional project expenses or resources. Successful project managers are able to identify the conditions that necessitate accelerating a project.

Francesco Cirillo, a student, developed the Pomodoro Technique in the late 1980s. He was having trouble focusing on his studies and finishing tasks. Feeling overwhelmed, he challenged himself to just 10 minutes of focused study time. Motivated by the challenge, he found a tomato shaped kitchen timer, and that's how the technique started.

Who is a ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—บ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ? The Scrum Master in a Scrum Team serves as a coach and guide, ensuring their team comprehends and adheres to the principles, values, and practices of the scrum framework. They facilitate discussions to resolve conflicts and enhance collaboration within and across teams, manage obstacles that hinder progress, and coach the team towards greater self-management. By fostering these elements, the scrum master enables the team to effectively utilize scrum's iterative process, ultimately delivering products, services, and features that resonate with customers. Just a pinch of humor: Scrum Masters sometimes turn scrum meetings into a contest of who can come up with the most creative excuses for why tasks aren't progressing as expected. As the primary representative of the customer and key stakeholders, the Product Owner must fully understand and prioritize their needs, translating them into actionable tasks for the development team. Being a Product Owner is not a task to be casually added to someone's existing responsibilities. It is a full-time role that requires dedicated focus, especially in a Scrum team. The PO is responsible for balancing what is desirable from a customer's perspective with what is feasible from a technical and operational standpoint, ensuring the product remains viable for the business. The PO must collaborate closely with the delivery team to ensure they understand the product vision and backlog priorities, guiding the team in delivering features that align with t...
